State-Tribal Compact Approved: Quapaw Nation to Provide Law Enforcement for Commerce, Oklahoma

The Oklahoma State Joint Session of State-Tribal Relations unanimously approves a compact between the State of Oklahoma and Quapaw Nation to provide law enforcement to the city of Commerce, Oklahoma. 


Comments from Oklahoma District 7 Representative Steve Bashore:

"Today is another example of Northeastern Oklahoma continuing to be the model for collaboration and cooperation with other sovereign tribal nations in regard to public safety. We extend a sincere appreciation for the continued help and support of Quapaw Nation as we officially enter into an agreement with Quapaw Nation and the city for Commerce to provide law enforcement and ensure the public safety continues to be a priority for not Green Country but all of Oklahoma."


Quapaw Nation Chair Wena Supernaw: 

"The Quapaw Nation is proud to have a strong relationship with the City of Commerce. We appreciate the Quapaw Nation Marshalls steadfast commitment to public safety and law enforcement and willingness to serve the citizens of Commerce. We are appreciative of the consideration and support by the Joint Committee on State Tribal Relations, including Chair Scott Fetgatter, Mike Osburn, Josh West, Ajay Pittman, and our very own District 7 Steve Bashore. This is another great example of public safety is best served where a sovereign tribal nation, a city, and state government come together cooperatively."


Quapaw Nation Executive Director of Public Safety Charles Addington: 

"This agreement is just another example of the Quapaw Nation's unwavering commitment to providing seamless public safety services to all communities within the Quapaw Nation reservation, said Executive Director of Public Safety Charles Addington.  This collaborative effort with the City of Commerce allows us to thwart criminal elements who seek to exploit the overlapping criminal justice systems.
